Theory theory theory...

Yesterday I had my first day of Advertising theory lectures. The first lecture just gave us an overview of the year and I was told I had to make this blog! So here it is...

At lunch Natasha, Emily, Maddy and I discussed 'Marionette' a bit more. Natasha brought up maybe playing on the idea of a puppet on a string and about control and linking this to advertising. We all really liked this idea and started drawing ideas for logos. we 're maybe thinking about a hand controlling a marionette to get across this idea of control and manipulation.

Later we had our first contextual studies lecture and discussed the importance of the development in technology in relation to the development of advertising, i.e advertisers take advantage of the developments in media and technology to deliver adverts in new and diverse ways. An example I thought of was an article I read on the BBC website a while ago about an advert for a charity in a bus stop in Oxford Street which uses a camera to detect whether the viewer is male or female and then depending on this will show an advert or not. If the viewer is male they will be shown the charity's web page, whereas if they are female they will be shown a full advert for the charity which aims to raise money for girls and women in developing countries. Apparently the advert does this to make the men aware of gender discrimination. I personally think the new take on advertising is really interesting and while the advert was in operation i imagine it really made people think about the Charity's causes and over the four months it was expected to raise over £250,000 for Charity so its got to be a good thing. Here's the article....

And while I was looking I also found this really interesting article about how technology has influenced advertising. I must remember to keep this article at hand when I write my essay this term which will be about how advertising has taken advantage of developing media....

Whilst in contextual studies we started reading an exert from 'A History of Communication: Six Informative Revolutions' by Irving Fang. What I read of it was really interesting and informative and an easy read so will definitely be a book I'm going to buy and read fully

In class my lecture Vishua also discussed two possible trips we might me making; one to the Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising, which would be so interesting, and secondly to an exhibition at the British Museum about the history of money which would also be great to visit. If either of these exexhibitions don't go ahead I'll definitley be going of my own accord...
